It Tastes Like Spring

Sure, the crocuses (crocii?) are blooming, the temps are rising, the grass is greening. People are walking (a little) slower, Uggs are stashed away (amen to that!), and the little corner markets are selling bunches of daffodils and tulips.

But the real sign of spring in NYC is the re-emergence of two foodstuffs: Iced coffee and Mr. Softee. Certainly, New Yorkers can not be expected to give up their java simply because the temps are a little higher. No, just add a little ice, milk, and sugar, and you've got your caffeine and your cold drink in one. I enjoy iced coffee--it's replaced my white hot chocolate, btw--but I can't figure out why it's more expensive than a regular coffee. Answers, anyone?

The kids and I spotted the first Mr. Softee cone last week, and I actually stopped a 10 year old girl on the sidewalk to ask where the truck was parked. The kitschy little truck was waiting right where she told (across the street from the elementary school), and we indulged in small vanilla cones with sprinkles. Now that's what spring tastes like.

I just indulged in my first caramel frappacino this Spring. Windows down, radio up, no kids in the car, and warm air in my face ... ahhh ... nothing better.

Now, that is cool. No pun intended. It'll be several more months before the ice cream truck comes down our street.

As for the iced coffee, the only think I can think is that they have to brew it extra strength so that it still tastes like coffee so maybe they go through more coffee beans to make the iced stuff. Or else they are importing their ice from Finland.

I brought my girls to get a McDonalds cone the other day just because an ice cream cone sounded so good. No ice cream trucks around here so McD's had to do the job. It still tasted fabulous!

quite right Lorraine~
iced coffee, when made properly, is double the strength of a regular pot of coffee and then chilled overnight-without ice-which dilutes it and what's the point in that, I ask?
and D-if you just make a pot at night before bed, stick it in the fridge and keep all your Dunkin' iced coffee cups from this week-you will never have to buy another again..........
